Tyee Bentgrass

Downloads: Label

Tyee possesses a bright, dark true-green color, not a blue green like many of the new creeping bentgrasses. It maintains this color through the heat of summer and into winter. This color is uniform and provides an appealing contrast with other grasses in the fairway. Tyee has shown superior Brown Patch and Dollar Spot resistance. It has also demonstrated excellent resistance to Copper Spot and Pythium Root Rot and high resistance to Pink Snow Mold. Tyee, like many high density bentgrasses used for greens (Penn A-4, Shark, Penn A-1, Declaration, Kingpin and T-1) requires more extensive management for thatch control, including top-dressing and verticutting. The rewards from using Tyee are a superior putting surface, reduced syringing, less herbicides, and reduced thatch production when compared to other high density bentgrasses.

Shark Bengrass

Tech Sheet

Rated #1 for establishment. Shark vigorously grows to form a dense uniform stand that competes against poa and recuperates from divot injury and ball marks.

Aggressive, bright dark green color, with high shoot density. More upright. Improved summer performance and disease resistance, particularly to dollar spot and take all patch.

Shark delivers consistent results on any green composition even under mowing conditions under 1/8th inch and reduced fungicides. Trial locations range from cool north to both dry and humid southernly sites.

Penneagle II

Downloads: Label

Penneagle II Bentgrass provides an excellent playing surface for tees and fairways. It has a medium-fine, non-aggressive, semi-erect growth habit with a dark green coloration. Early spring green-up helps compete against grassy weeds such as Poa annua. Penneagle II can be used for winter overseeding in the sunbelt.

A top performing fairway bentgrass, Penneagle germinates quickly. Penneagle’s upright, dense growth habit helps crowd out Poa annua. Penneagle is considered salt tolerant.

Maintenance:
The first mowing should be done when there isuniform turf coverage with a height from 1/4 to 3/8 inches and definitely not more than a 1/2 inch. The mower should have a smooth front roller. It has been reported that some people have used grooved rollers too early. Clippings should not be caught early on, as this will help build a biomass or padding that will protect the plant from damage. During the early stage it is important to do a weekly light topdressing. This will cover the clippings and smooth any roughness in the surface as well as accelerate the filling-in of the turf grass canopy. It is possible to get to the desired mowing height within six to seven weeks after the first mowing, if not sooner. The Penn series grasses are maintained by most facilities at 1/8 inch or lower for greens

Penncross Bentgrass

Downloads: Label

Penncross has set the bentgrass standard since 1955. It has a medium green coloration and has rapid establishment. It is known for its aggressive, lateral growth habit and wide range of adaptability. Penncross has excellent resistance to dollar spot as well as other diseases.
Penncross bent grass is designed for extensively managed golf greens and tees and lawn bowling surfaces.

Penncross performs best in soils with a pH of 5.5 to 8. It has a moderate nitrogen requirement with 1-2 pounds of actual N per 1,000 square feet per year adequate in most situations. Penncross’ optimum mowing height is 3/16 to 5/16 inch but can be adjusted higher or lower depending upon maintenance practices and intended use. Penncross creeping bent grass performs best on a sandy soil and tolerates clay soils with adequate drainage. Most bent grasses do not perform well in wet areas, however, Penncross creeping bent grass can tolerate saturated soil conditions for short periods of time.

Memorial Bentgrass

Memorial Creeping bentgrass is a medium-fine leaved, medium-dark green bentgrass with improved dollar spot resistance. Memorial is an outstanding creeping bentgrass for golf course tees, fairways and putting greens. It’s an excellent choice for overseeding into existing bentgrass tees and fairways. Breed at Rutgers University for a fine texture and excellent density, plus improved dollar spot performance, Memorial will compliment and improve “older generation” creeping bentgrass varieties. In addition, it is also ideal for improving turf quality and enhancing disease resistance in blends.

It is an ideal variety for use in golf greens, tees and in blends for fairways. Memorial Bentgrass has a medium to fine leaf texture with a medium to dark green colour. Its improved resistance to Dollar Spot and Brown Patch aids in the reduction of fungicide applications which helps reduce associated maintenance costs.

A sowing rate of 5-7 g/m2 or 50 -70 kg/ha is recommended to a depth of no more than 5mm deep. A light rake of a cultivated surface will create a seed bed and a gentle roll following seeding will ensure good soil to seed contact, which is required to achieve successful establishment. The seedbed must be kept moist by irrigation applications, the frequency of which should correspond with weather factors such as temperature, wind and cloud cover. The surface should be rolled to firm the surface prior to the first mowing taking place, solid rollers are advised to minimise plant injury. The first mowing should not remove more than one third of the total leaf blade, so for greens to be cut at 5mm the sward height must not be more than 15mm in length.

Mackenzie Bentgrass

Downloads: Label

Mackenzie has the density required for low heights of cut on greens, especially at the reduced fertility often utilized, with the more aggressive lateral growth needed for fairways. Mackenzie will withstand wear in all seasons with excellent ball mark recovery. It has high resistance to dollar spot, brown patch and Fusarium patch. Mackenzie has high summer performance and a winter-active growth so it is a superior choice no matter where your course is or the time of year of your heaviest play. MacKenzie is a multi-use creeping bent. It will tolerate the lowest putting green cutting heights, but also is excellent for tee and fairway use. It has a medium dark green color, a finer leaf texture, and an overall dense and attractive appearance, even under reduced fertility. It is very well adapted to areas with significant summer stress. It has been bred to produce a healthy and deep root system, even in the summer, and also resists ball mark damage. MacKenzie produces a uniform turf with excellent year round performance.

Today, the A’s and G’s are recognized as some of the finest bentgrasses ever produced for putting greens. The A’s and G’s provide a consistent, virtually grainless putting surface that adapts easily to raising and lowering of cutting heights, allowing superintendents to manage green speeds without worries. Dense-tillered and upright-growing, the A’s and G’s need less fertilizer, less water and less fungicide applications. Thanks to their deep roots, they more effectively tolerate low mowing, heat, humidity, cold, disease and wear.

Penn A-1 has a very dark green coloration, fine leaf texture, tremendous heat and cold tolerance, very high density and superior disease resistance. It has very good winter color and spring green-up. It provides a superb putting surface and will provide an excellent playing surface on tees and fairways, too.

Penn A-1 has a very dark green coloration, fine leaf texture, tremendous heat and cold tolerance, very high density, and superior disease resistance. It has very good winter color and spring green-up. It provides a superb putting surface and will provide an excellent playing surface on tees and fairways too. Recommended seeding rate 1.25 to 1.50 lbs/1,000 sq ft for new plantings and 0.1 to 0.25 lbs/1,000 sq ft for interseeding. It has proven adaptable to various growing conditions and management practices. There is University data It has been stated that these grasses are different and not to be managed as other bents. Summarizing this, it means less fertilizer, less water, less babying than the old bents that superintendents are accustomed to. In other words, it adds up to less worry. These bents are tough, useful grasses that require different management, but overall the management is actually easier than the superintendent is accustomed to. The end result is a very high quality playing surface that thrives on low mowing and culminates in near-perfect conditions, with no extraordinary practices.

The formulations and rates may need to be adjusted according to soil test results and turfgrass performance of the listed grow-in. After the turfgrass has grown in, fertilizer applications should be kept light and infrequent. This can be accomplished by the use of a fertigation system or a soluble product. The amount of the fertilizer should be .1 lbs of nitrogen every 14 days +/-, depending on approximate growth, clippings, and performance. The yearly amount of nitrogen will be from 2 to 4 lbs, phosphorous 2 to 3 lbs, and potassium 6 to 10 lbs. As far as micronutrient amounts, this should be checked with tissue tests during the year and again with a soil test in the early spring.
